All Saints Day

“All ye holy Saints, men and women of God, pray for us!”
-The Litany of Saints

“Blessed be God in His Angels and His Saints!”
-The Divine Praises

“I believe in the communion of Saints!” -The Apostle’s Creed

November starts off with the commemoration of All Saints Day! All Saints Day also known as All Hallows' Day follows All Hallows' Eve or Halloween and is the second of the three days traditionally known as All Hallows' Tide. Today we honor all of the Saints of God, canonized and yet to be canonized, known and unknown. Today's feast is a reminder of the universal call to holiness, made known at Vatican II. As a proud vegan Catholic I also wish you a Happy World Vegan Day!  Today is also the beginning of Dia de Los Muertos in Hispanic cultures. Read more about The Ofrenda, the special altar set up to remember the dead. Today would be a good day to watch movies about Dia de Muertos, such as Disney's  "Coco". In 2024 All Saints' Day is on First Friday.

Today's liturgical color is white or gold for the honor and glory of God's holy ones. Todays liturgical color ties into the readings where the Book of Revelation speaks of the Saints robes being white as they are washed in the Blood of the Lamb.

Today also begins the month devoted to the souls in Purgatory. Today begins a unique octave (8 day period) where we can gain plenary indulgences for their release. To gain said indulgence visit a cemetery and pray (any prayer, even mental prayer) or from Noon today to midnight tomorrow, pray the Lord's Prayer and Apostles Creed for the Pope's intentions at a Catholic Church. These conditions must also be met to gain an indulgence:

Some fitting songs for today would be “Revelation Song” by Kari Jobe and “Worthy is the Lamb” as they are based on today’s scripture readings.

Note: Some people, such as myself and my husband take the day after Halloween as the beginning of the Christmas season. Of course Advent comes before Christmas and All Saints and All souls are a recollection of death and therefore are part of Halloween. Nonetheless, the joy that Christmas brings only enhances today's feast. Note also the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas" captures the Halloween and Christmas feeling. If you think about it, Jack most likely discovers Christmas Town on November 1st when he explores the  Hinterlands (see picture below).

Note: Any uncarved or pumpkins with no mold can be taken to a forest for the animals. Any pumpkins with rot can be taken to sites such as those listed above.
