Happy April
Each month of the calendar year is dedicated to a Catholic Devotion. In April it is the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit. This is because Easter is typically in April and when it is in March the season still continues through April and the Holy Eucharist and the Holy Spirit have a special role in the Easter mysteries. More information on Catholic belief about the Eucharist can be found Here and Here. April 1st is also April Fools’ Day (see below). April 1st is also the beginning of Arab American Heritage Month and Earth Month . Finally, for those lovers of Halloween like myself, look for “Halfway to Halloween” events happening near you or on streaming services like Shudder. The themes of Halloween overlap with those of the Lenten season as well and thus spooky movies during Lent are most appropriate as Lent continues into the month of April this year.
April 1st is a day for pranks, jokes and laughter! April 1st is the day of fools because New Year's Day used to be on March 25th and would be celebrated a week long. Once the New Year date changed, those who didn't adopt the calendar were deemed as fools! Today might also be the day of revelry and fun due to spring's arrival and the waning darkness.
Religious legends that are sometimes commemorated today are to commemorate the "Fools errands" that our Lord endured when Jesus met with Pilate, Herod then back to Pilate on the day of His blessed Passion. It may also commemorate the birds that Noah sent from the Ark to see if the flood had stopped. Today is a day of bad luck for the Germans who say it is the day of the devil being cast out and Judas' birthday.
Consideration and Compassion Note: Please note that pregnancy jokes are in poor taste and unsympathetic, there are plenty of harmless pranks but this isn't one of them! Beware also of people's food sensibilities and for re-organizing or making a mess for people who suffer from OCD, anxiety or phobias.
