The Visitation of Mary

“Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”

Today we celebrate the last day of Mary’s Month by the commemoration of Her Visitation to St. Elizabeth.  It is the day that Mary meets with her cousin Elizabeth because the Angel Gabriel when announcing to Mary the incarnation of Christ, he also told her that Elizabeth was pregnant. In her charity Mary selflessly visits her cousin. On this day St. John leaps in the womb at the sound of Mary’s voice and is purified in St. Elizabeth’s womb by Jesus’ presence within Mary’s. The Holy Spirit inspires Mary to pray the Magnificat after inspiring Elizabeth to first recite the second half of the Hail Mary, “Blessed art Thou…Mother of God”.  Therefore like the Annunciation today is a good day for special devotion to the Hail Mary! The Magnificat is also a testimony to the just and merciful power of God and the real Christian call to help the poor and downtrodden as the “rich are sent away empty.” The Canticle of Mary is a precursor to the gospel of Her Divine Son. This feast was moved in 1969 from July 2nd which was the day after the Octave day (end of the week long celebration) of John the Baptist's Nativity. It was moved to today's date to coincide with the biblical timeline of occurring before St. John's birth. We honor Mary "setting out in haste" to share the good news of God's incarnation within Her and to care for Her cousin, St. Elizabeth selflessly. As today is intimately tied into the Christmas story, much like the Feast of the Annunciation, today is a Christmas feast!

The Visitation is the Second Joyful Mystery and would be a good day to pray a decade of the Rosary

Today's colors are white or gold liturgically for Mary's Purity and Blue for laypeople for Her royalty.
