Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy!

O God, who made the Mother of your Son to be our Mother and our Queen, graciously grant that, sustained by her intercession, we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom the glory promised to your children. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen

Today marks one week since Our Lady was Assumed into Heaven so we focus on God crowning Her as Queen of the Universe. This event is important as Mary takes on the title and role vacated by Eve.

Before The Church retained only the Octaves of Christmas and Easter as She does today, all major feasts including the Assumption had an octave. Most solemnities that have an octave closed the week long celebration by crowing it (pun intended) with a second feast. For example the octave of Christmas is closed with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. While there is no modern octave of the Assumption the 8th day (the feast day plus one full week later) after the Assumption which is August 22nd is the feast of Mary’s Coronation.

This feast commemorates that after Her Assumption into glory the Blessed Virgin Mary was crowned Queen of the Universe and Queen of all Creation. Just as Eve was the mother of all the living before the fall of humanity, Mary, the New Eve becomes our Mother at the Cross and is now crowned Queen. 

A plenary indulgence is given for visiting a church on the feast of its titular Saint. Any church titled Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Mary, Queen of the Universe holds a plenary indulgence under the normal conditions (see indulgences section) and for praying the creed and Our Father once. Also an indulgence can also be gained for those who are consecrated to Mary on this day in previous years and for any pious associations with indulgences gained on any Marian feast day.

When praying the “Hail, Holy Queen” today, take extra time to meditate on the words to honor our Queen Mother!

A daily Catholic devotion is the recitation of three Hail Marys to highlight Mary’s relationship to the Father as His Daughter, the Son as His Mother and the Holy Spirit as His Spouse. Today let us be ever more attentive to this practice and remember the triple crown with which they honored Her!

Happy June

   Each month of the calendar year is dedicated to a Catholic Devotion. In  June it is  the  Sacred Heart of Jesus  because this month is when the annual feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated. June also marks  LGBTQ+ Pride Month . Pride month this year is a very important time because of the attack on the Trans community and the bigotry by conservatives towards the gay community. This is classic vice under the mask of virtue that saints warn about.   Each month of the calendar year is dedicated to a Catholic Devotion. In April   it is  the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit .   This is because Easter is typically in April and when it is in March the season still continues through April and the Holy Eucharist and the Holy Spirit have a special role in the Easter mysteries. More information on Catholic belief about the Eucharist can be found Here and Here.  April 1st is also April Fools’ Day (see below). April 1st is also the beginning of Arab American Heritage Month  and Earth Month . Finally, for those lovers of Halloween like myself, look for “Halfway to Halloween” events happening near you or on streaming services like Shudder. The themes of Halloween overlap with those of the Lenten season as well and thus spooky movies during Lent are most appropriate as  Lent continues into the month of April this year.
