The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus

"There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved." (Acts 4:12)

Today we honor the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Jesus was given His name by St. Gabriel when he appeared to Mary to announce that She was chosen to be the Mother of God. Jesus is given His name 8 days after His birth as sacred scripture tells us. While this event would’ve occurred on January 1st, that day is dedicated to Christ’s Circumcision which also occurred on that day. January 3rd is the closest date without an observance already being held. Today is also the 10th day of Christmas. Catholic legend attributes a sacred theme to each day and the 10 drummers drumming symbolize the 10 Commandments:

St. Gertrude’s Flower Prayer

Hail! Vivifying Gem of Divine Nobility! Hail, Most Loving Jesus, Unfading Flower of Human Dignity! Thou art my Sovereign and only Good.

“Whosoever salutes Me, as you have done, in reparation for the blasphemies and outrages which are poured forth on Me throughout the world, when he is tempted at the hour of his death and accused by the demon, will be consoled by Me.”  – Our Lord to St. Gertrude

Holy Name Bedtime Prayer

Trace on your forehead, I. N. R. I., saying: May Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, preserve me from sudden and unprepared death. Amen. (Taught by Christ to St Edmund to preserve us from sudden death. This is found in St. Gertrude’s prayer book.)

Loving Affections Towards Jesus

O Thou most excelling King of kings, Prince of glory, my loving Jesus, Thou art the life of my soul; may all the affection of my heart be inflamed with the ardor of Thy love, and forever united to Thee. May it sink back baffled and exhausted when it would love aught but what tends to Thee alone; for Thou art the brilliance of all color, the savor of all dainties, the fragrance of all odors, the charm of all melody, the soothing repose of all love. O Thou overflowing abyss of Divinity, in Thee is pleasure most enrapturing, from Thee ever-gushing streams of plenty spread around, towards Thee a gentle force irresistibly attracts, through Thee our souls are inundated with thrilling gladness. O King of kings most worthy, sovereign Lord of all, Prince most glorious, most clement Ruler, Thou most mighty Protector; Thou art the vivifying gem of human dignity, O most wonderful in Thy working, gentlest of Teachers, Wisest in counsel, most kind and effectual Helper, Friend faithful unto death. No union is so intimate, so beatific, as Thine, O Thou transporting, soothing Lover of souls, most tender and chaste Spouse of Thy chosen. Thou art the spring Flower of noble gracefulness, O my brother most fair, ruddy, and comely in Thy youth, most winning companion, Host most munificent in Thy provision; I choose Thee in preference to all creatures, for Thy sake I renounce all pleasure, for Thee I run with joy to meet all adversity, and in all I do I seek no other praise than Thine. I acknowledge with heart and mouth that Thou art the root from which these and all good things spring. With the energy of Thy fervor I unite my intention to that of Thy most availing prayer, that in virtue of this Divine union every movement of rebellion may be quelled and crushed within me, and that I may be led by Thee to the summit, and pinnacle of perfection. Amen.

“Whoever repeats this prayer shall receive the grace to know Me more intimately, and shall receive into his soul the splendor of My Divinity, even as he who holds up to the sun a mirror of pure gold collects therein the dazzling effulgence of its rays.”- Our Lord to St. Gertrude

Pious Practices

Our Lord revealed to St. Gertrude that if someone devoutly calls God tender names like beloved, sweetest etc. that as long as the person dies in the state of grace they shall receive for each invocation a special privilege in Heaven for like that of St. John the Beloved Disciple.

Have the Holy Name always on your lips and have it written on cards to place under your pillow, on or above doorways and to carry on your person.

Whenever invoking the Holy Name offer to God the Incarnation, the Passion and all the World’s Masses. -From “The Wonders of the Holy Name”

Pray “Admirable is the Name of God!” whenever you hear blasphemy or God’s name in vain. God revealed this devotion to Sister Mary of St. Peter and said it would repair 1,000 blasphemies.

Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus is also comprised of devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus as Christ Himself requested the formation of “The Defenders of the Holy Name of God”. Devotees should wear a cross with “Blessed be the Name of God” on one side and “Begone Satan” on the reverse. Ven. Pope Pius XII also approved a medal of the Holy Face as well as the feast of the Holy Face to be celebrated on Shrove Tuesday.

DEVOTION TO THE HOLY FACE, Isaiah 50:6

Prayers of Reparation for Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation

(The following are preferably prayed publicly before the Eucharist or an image of the Holy Face. Every day an Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and The Golden Arrow should be prayed.)

Dear Lord, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, I (we) offer Thee these prayers in reparation for the sins which offend God the most in these modern times – the sins of blasphemy and the profanation of Sunday and Thy Holy Days of Obligation. ( Our Father, Hail Mary,  Glory Be…)

The Golden Arrow Prayer

May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Jesus revealed this prayer to Sister Mary of St. Peter and said that reciting it releases a stream of graces from His Sacred Heart for the conversion of sinners.

Litany of the Holy Face of Jesus

I salute Thee, I adore Thee and I love Thee, O adorable Face of Jesus, my Beloved, noble Seal of the Divinity! outraged anew by blasphemers. I offer Thee, through the heart of Thy blessed Mother, the worship of all the Angels and Saints, most humbly beseeching Thee to repair and renew in me and in all men Thine Image disfigured by sin.

O adorable Face which was adored, with profound respect, by Mary and Joseph when they saw Thee for the first time, have mercy on us (repeat have mercy on us after every invocation.)

O adorable Face which ravished with joy, in the stable of Bethlehem, the Angels, the shepherds and the Magi,

O adorable Face which transpierced with a dart of love in the Temple, the saintly old man Simeon and the prophetess Anna,

O adorable Face which filled with admiration the Doctors of the Law when Thou appeared in the Temple at the age of twelve years,

O adorable Face which possesses beauty always ancient and always new,

O adorable Face which is the masterpiece of the Holy Ghost, in which the Eternal Father is well pleased,

O adorable Face which is the ineffable mirror of the divine perfections,

Adorable Face of Jesus which was so mercifully bowed down on the Cross, on the day of Thy Passion, for the salvation of the world! Once more today in pity bend down towards us poor sinners. Cast upon us a glance of compassion and give us Thy peace.

O adorable Face which became brilliant like the sun and radiant with glory, on the Mountain of Tabor,

O adorable Face which wept and was troubled at the tomb of Lazarus,

O adorable Face which was rendered sad at the sight of Jerusalem, and shed tears on that ungrateful city,

O adorable Face which was bowed down to the ground in the Garden of Olives, and covered with confusion for our sins,

O adorable Face which was covered with the sweat of blood,

O adorable Face which was struck by a vile servant, covered with a veil of shame, and profaned by the sacrilegious hands of Thine enemies,

O adorable Face which by Its divine glance, wounded the heart of St. Peter with a dart of sorrow and love,

Be merciful to us, O my God! Do not reject our prayers, when in the midst of our afflictions, we call upon Thy Holy Name and seek with love and confidence Thy adorable Face.

O adorable Face which was washed and anointed by Mary and the holy women and covered with a shroud,

O adorable Face which was all resplendent with glory and beauty on the day of the Resurrection,

O adorable Face which is hidden in the Eucharist,

O adorable Face which will appear at the end of time in the clouds with great power and great majesty,

O adorable Face which will make sinners tremble,

O adorable Face which will fill the just with joy for all eternity,

O adorable Face which merits all our reverence, our homage and our adoration,

O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!

O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!

O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!

Prayer to the Holy Face for the Father to Have Mercy on Sinners

Almighty and Eternal Father, since it has pleased Our Divine Savior to reveal to mankind in modern times the power residing in His Holy Face, we now avail ourselves of this Treasure in our great need. Since Our Savior Himself promised that by offering to Thee His Holy Face disfigured in the Passion we can procure the settlement of all the affairs of our household, and that nothing will be refused to us, we now come before Thy throne. Eternal Father, turn away Thine angry gaze from our guilty people whose face has become unsightly in Thine eyes. Look instead upon the Face of Thy Beloved Son; for this is the Face of Him in whom Thou art well pleased. We now offer Thee His Holy Face covered with blood, sweat, dust, spittle and shame, in reparation for the worst crimes of our age, which are blasphemy and the desecration of Thy holy days*. We thus hope to appease Thine anger justly provoked against us. The All-Merciful Advocate opens His mouth to plead our cause; listen to His cries, behold His tears, O God, and through the merits of His Holy Face hearken to Him when He intercedes for us poor miserable sinners. Amen

“All those who meditate frequently on the vision of My Divine Face, attracted by the desires of love, shall receive within them, by the virtue of My Humanity, a bright ray of My Divinity, which shall enlighten their inmost souls, so that they shall reflect the light of My Countenance in a special manner throughout eternity.” –Jesus Christ to St. Gertrude

“They shall receive in themselves, by the impression of my humanity, a bright irradiation of My Divinity, and shall be so illuminated by it that their inmost souls that, by their likeness to My Face, they shall shine in Eternal life with a brightness surpassing that of so many others.” –Jesus to St. Gertrude

“Those who embrace this work of reparation with true piety will not be lost, for I myself will defend them before My Father and I will give them the Kingdom of Heaven. I will grant them the grace of final perseverance.”–Jesus to St. Mechtilde

Our Lord told St. Mechtilde for those who honor His Holy Face: “Not one of them shall be separated from Me.”
