Memorial Day
As Christians we have a great duty to pray for the souls of the faithful departed. This and every Memorial Day we are grateful for the brave men and women who died for the cause of our civil freedoms as we remember that Jesus Christ died for our soul's freedom.
Today, fly your American Flag, dress patriotic, wear a poppy and take part in the National moment of silence at 3pm (3pm is used because that's when people are busy with activities so it provides time to pause and pray as the Angelus does at Noon daily).
But most of all, Memorial Day is a great day to visit a cemetery/memorial and pray for the souls of those who died defending our freedoms, as well as praying for the intercession of Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception as patroness of America to intercede for their souls and their families as a grateful nation (a partial indulgence can be gained for prayers at a cemetery.)
Although we don't want war, and disagree with its existence, we honor the bravery of these men and women who put aside their own interests and served their fellow human.
While today is known as the unofficial beginning of summer and is filled with fun, and I believe our service members would want us to celebrate our freedoms that they secured, we can’t separate today from the memory of fallen military, so may today’s celebrations be to honor the lives of those who laid them down for liberty and the freedoms that they secured. "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." John 13:15
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Memorial Day History (Note: One of the first Memorial Day events was held by former enslaved persons, so we join in the patriotism that surpasses all things as we strive for liberty and justice for all people as we push forward, in union with our fallen soldiers, towards the promise for equality and liberty.)

Alternatives to “Happy” Memorial Day
(Many Catholic Cemeteries will have a Mass around Memorial Day for the Fallen.)
Safety Note: Be aware of swimmers safety for the unofficial beginning of summer. This includes being sure your child has only bright color bathing suits and not shades like blue, white, neutrals or anything that wouldn’t be visible underwater.
