Days of Care for Creation

In Sacred Scripture, God has placed humanity as stewards of His creation. There are three major days in which we recall this sacred duty. World Wildlife Day which is annually on March 3rd, Earth Day annually on April 22nd and Arbor Day which is the last Friday in April. See the links below for more information. In 2024 World Wildlife Day was just added but the conservation information attached to the other events is still relevant. also) Take the time to watch a documentary and experience the beauty of our planet. Other good movies to watch would be "FernGully" or "the Lorax".

Miscellaneous Tips for Creation Care and Animal Safety:

Above all remember that before bringing any chemicals into your home, feeding anything to animals or interacting with wildlife to find out the necessary steps to reduce harm. Be mindful of using machinery or using anything outdoors, releasing it into the atmosphere has its effects on creation.

  1. Cats and cars: bang the hood, honk the horn before starting the car in severe heat and cold as cats will seek shelter in or under cars.
  2. Your home should have a notice on the door so if your home has an emergency, first responders are aware of any pets inside.
  3. (Bird) Feeding: It may be tempting to feed a wild animal but don’t, if you’re going to feed birds, bread is harmful.Only plain white refined(non organic or raw) sugar in hummingbird feeders, have to change to prevent ferment. If you have a pet bird, teflon in kitchen products is very dangerous. Keep your pet away from the kitchen when cooking.
  4. Relasing balloons with strings is dangerous to birds.
  5. Foliage: Be careful picking wildflowers, don’t kill dandelions, be careful chopping up leaves and wait for temperatures to be 50• because pollinators sleep in leaves. If you uncover a bee, they are hibernating. Cover them back them up or if they begin moving place them in a shelter under leaves. Also leave up plants that have shriveled up so they can be shelter for animals in winter months. Finally, disassemble any brush piles before burning to avoid harming any inhabitants.
  6. Plants: Don’t trigger (touch) Venus fly traps. It causes them to digest themselves and die.
  7. Cut up garbage animals may get stuck in, including hair from brushes etc make sure to recycle (inc plastic bags) and use reusable bags and to take lids off cans and squish the can when you recycle them as well as to secure broken glass in a bag.
  8. Watch for tied bags on the side of the road and in the road during Kitten season. If you find animals that you think may be abandoned, place a circle of flour around them and if the circle isn’t disturbed they’ve been abandoned and you can step in to help. Calling animal control also helps.
  9. Don’t pick up brown sand dollars or starfish (if they appear dried out scoop the sand underneath them and have your hands covered and place them in the water) and don’t treat coral as plants, they’re living creatures.
  10. Test the pavement before walking the dog and temperature in cars in summer.
  11. Be careful with insecticides.
  12. Learn pet cpr and bleeding control.
  13. Avoid toxic foods and ingredients including birch sugar (xylitol) and rawhide.
  14. Lysol/pine sol on floor toxic to cats as well as salt lamps if they’re licked by your feline. The same goes for using pain relief creams and hand sanitizer, make sure your cat doesn’t lick spots of application or your hands the same goes for the toxicity of certain hair growth formulas.
  15. Be careful of certain scent diffusers like wallflowers and misters if using oils and scents with toxic scents ie cloves- make sure certain fragrances don't contain it if genuine scent.)
  16. Cover any open containers to prevent animals from drowning, including watering cans.
  17. If you have a “pest” problem always use catch and release as opposed to cruel traps or poison which has more of an impact then you think ie) poisoned mice kills owls.
  18. If you’re going to move a snail to a safer place, gently tap their shell first. Otherwise just ripping them off the ground can kill them.
  19. If a bee stings you it was to defend itself so instead of killing it or letting it die, sometimes the bee can pull their stinger out if you give them a chance they’ll walk in a circle to loosen it from your skin. A small act of mercy for the bees means a lot for our survival as species, we couldn’t survive without bees! Also for our pollinator friends it’s helpful to put corks or marble in bird baths so they can hydrate while staying safe.
