Saint Joseph's Day
(Long Live St. Joseph, Vee-va San Ja-sep-ee)
ITE AD IOSEPH
(Go to Joseph, Eat-ay Add Yo-seff Genesis 41:55)
Today we honor the caregiver of Jesus and Mary, St. Joseph. As St. Patrick's Day is the day for green and Irish heritage, today is for red and Italian heritage. The red is most likely due to it being the first color of the Italian flag. Although Saints are typically honored on their anniversary of death, which may be St. Joseph's case, his feast also falls close to the Annunciation. This illustrious Saint is honored by Italians as he saved them from a drought that threatened the Sicilian people, having saved them in Spring is another reason why his feast might be celebrated on it's current date.
Like that of His Spouse, the Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph enjoys a universal patronage. Not only is he the patron of the universal Church, he has an intercessory hand in all needs. Although there is a patron for all needs, they can all be found as well in St. Joseph. Carpenters, Husbands, fathers, travelers, the engaged, for chastity, obedience to God's will, a happy death and so many more, ITE AD IOSEPH!
St. Joseph's Day Symbols: The symbols of St. Joseph are related to either tools of his trade, the lily for purity or a budding staff referring to a legend that he was chosen to be Our Lady's spouse when his walking staff bloomed with lilies.
Prayers and Devotions to St. Joseph (I use the 30 day Litany meditations to prepare for consecration to this great saint that are more inclusive.)
St Joseph Movies: Most movies depicting the life of Christ will include St. Joseph in the nativity narrative. See also "Joseph of Nazareth".
All about St. Joseph (Ignore the Itapiringa and Sister Ephrem visions on the apparitions page which have been condemned by the Church and the site may not be aware of this.)
Italian Superstitions (It's also an Italian custom to place a statue of Mary in the window and a rosary in a bush for good weather)
A Plenary indulgence is gained today, under the usual conditions for anyone who visits a church named for St. Joseph and prays the Lord's Prayer and Apostle's Creed.
