Prayers in Times of Trouble

The following was compiled during the height of the COVID pandemic and edited on June 21st 2025 in response to the United States attack on Iran. The modern Rites of The Church do not subscribe certain prayers as she did in previous times. The purpose for this is to remind us that the Holy Mass takes pride of place over other devotionals. Therefore, Masses for Peace and Justice and the prayers therein are most efficacious. During COVID devotion to Mary, Help of the Roman People and the miraculous crucifix that Pope Francis used in his extraordinary Urbi et Orbi came to focus. In addition devotion to St. Michael was heightened as it should be again in times of increased tensions and unrest. The reception of the Sacraments, the Rosary with invocations to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as well as to St. Michael and the angels are helpful here as well as the Litany of the Saints and the Ave Maris Stella. In times like this The Church may publish an Oratio Imperata.

When we can't attend Mass: When streaming Mass it’s important to try and be involved as much as possible ie) praying the responses and following the postures (standing, kneeling etc.), it’s also beneficial to bless yourself with Holy Water before and after (televised) Mass. Above all, treat the time watching the Mass as if you’re really in church. When one cannot attend Holy Mass or stream it, pray the Rosary/another pious practice and read the Readings of the Day and reflect on them to sanctify the Lord’s Day in keeping with the Third Commandment.

A Reflection When We Cannot Attend Mass

Meditate on the Outpouring of Christ’s Blood for Our Redemption, His labors in exile during His life on earth wherein He seeks after us and desires to unite to us. Expressing gratitude for the blessings He has given us in the Holy Spirit. He replenishes us with His Spirit and fills us with joy even in pain due to our spiritual union. Therefore we are sanctified by His love. All good comes from Him even that which makes us pleasing to Him and our advance in virtue. All power in Heaven has been given to Jesus, let Him do His Will. Do not grieve that we cannot attend Mass but trust His Will even in this. (Adapted from a conversation between Jesus and St. Gertrude)

Note: During times such as these it's easy to be wearied that we are living in the end times but as faithful followers of Jesus if we are prayerful and seek to do good and repent of our sins and cling to Jesus we should fear nothing nor are there any “practices” we need to undertake to “be prepared” as some visionaries claim. We only need the Sacraments and prayer and we can have recourse to Sacramentals of the Church including blessed candles. No private revelation is binding and we need not be scrupulous to follow every letter of private revelation.
